Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) will import 8 lakh tonnes of furnace oil to fuel the rental and quick rental power plants in six months beginning from July this year, BPC sources said. The BPC has recently finalised the import estimation of the heavy fuel oil (HFO) after it had received requirements from the Power Development Board.

The authorities of the Dhaka City Corporation (South) have been directed to take necessary steps for smooth movement of traffic ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr in Jatrabari area by repairing all the potholes within two days. State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak made the directive while visiting the Mayor Hanif Flyover project site at Jatrabari yesterday. The minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the flyover on March 26 next year.

Malaysian Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S Subramaniam will visit Bangladesh after Eid-ul Fitr to observe Bangladesh’s recruitment procedures before starting to hire Bangladeshi workers, a Malaysian daily reported Friday. Malaysian Cabinet Committee on Foreign Workers and Illegal Immigrants agreed to send a delegation led by Subramaniam as its industries require foreign workers mostly in plantation and manufacturing sectors.

Met Office sources said there is no possibility of severe flood this month; and forecast only a short period of flood in some places of the country.

Valiant freedom fighter Colonel (retd) Shafaat Jamil Bir Bikram passed away yesterday. He was 71. Jamil was decorated with Bir Bikram title, the third highest gallantry award of Bangladesh, for his contribution towards the War of Liberation in 1971.

Dhaka stocks returned to the positive zone last week. DGEN, the benchmark general index of Dhaka Stock Exchange, gained 1.06 per cent, or 43.54 points, to close at 4,142.24 points.
