Bangladesh Information and Communication Technology Minister resigns

Syed Abul Hossain resigned as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Minister on Monday. In an open letter to the public published through different newspapers on Saturday, Syed Abul Hossain indicated this outcome.

The events unfolded in the following manner;

At around 7:30am, Syed Abul Hossain left his Gulshan residence in a an ordinary vehicle without his ministerial status flag. Upon visiting the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, he handed his resignation.

Past Performance;

Over the years the minister also came under fire from cross section of the mass population for his failure in repairing and maintaining the country’s roads and highways during his previous post. His performance finally resulted in his resigning from his previous ministerial post at the Ministry of Communications.

Accordingly, on December 5th 2011 Syed Abul Hossain was removed from the Communications Ministry and given the charge of ICT ministry last year after the World Bank brought corruption allegation against him and suspended its $ 1.2 billion loan for the $ 2.9 billion Padma bridge project.

Abul Hossain announced his resignation a day after Finance Minister AMA Muhith said that the government might consider accepting the World Bank’s fourth condition to persuade the global lender to review its cancellation of the Padma bridge loan, the condition being that the government send on leave public officials and on December 5, who were allegedly involved in corruption in the project.

It is notable that during the previous tenure of the Awami League government (1996-2001), Syed Abul Hossain was forced to resign as a state minister after he became controversial figure in the Ministry for holding dual passports.
